Can drive in UK with Indian License

"According to DVLA in UK

Get an International Driving Permit. It is probably available from your Indian AA. This is just a translation of your national permit and you need to carry both with you.

If you think that you are going to stay longer than 12 months in GB then you should consider getting a GB licence, once you are settled in.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/MotoringDecisionTrees/ExchangeaTestPassorForeignLicence/can_you_drive_in_gb.dsb

"Provided your full licence remains valid, you can drive any category of
small vehicle shown on your licence for up to 12 months from the time you
became resident. To ensure continuous driving entitlement a provisional GB
licence must have been obtained and a driving test(s) passed before the 12
month period elapses. If you obtain a provisional licence during this
period, you are not subject to provisional licence conditions e.g.
displaying `L' plates or being supervised by a qualified driver or being
precluded from motorways."

Drive in India with UK license

Ques:n #: I am an OCI and want to drive car in India on a short holiday what documents I require and how to go about it apart from full UK driver license which I already have, thanks for prompt reply,

Ans: As long as you are a tourist in India you should be able to drive in India if you have with you your valid UK driving license AND a International Driving Permit (IDP). Your UK driving license is not recognized without a IDP. You MUST have both these documents. As long as your IDP is valid you can drive with it.
An International Driving Permit (IDP) allows you to drive a private motor vehicle overseas when accompanied by a valid UK driving license. IDPs from UK are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

You can obtain an IDP over the counter at many post offices in the UK. You must apply IN PERSON (no third-party applications). You must complete an application form, available from the post office. You must also produce one of the following ORIGINAL valid documents:

√ Your UK driving license, or

√ Your UK pass certificate (certificate of competence to drive, valid for two years from the date of your test), together with your provisional driving license.
Once you get an IDP from UK you would be able to drive in India. Remember you must carry both the IDP and your UK drivers license when driving in India.

International Driving Permits are not meant to be a replacement for Indian Driving Licenses, If you are not a tourist but returning to India for resettlement then you should apply for and get a valid Indian driving license. To get a Indian driving license you will have to go through the full procedure of getting a license. Your UK driving license cannot be simply exchanged for a Indian Driving License

Take television from UK to India

Take television from UK to India

First thing you have to check is  Broadcasting signal type in India is PAL B where as the signal type in UK is PAL I. Check your TV manual to see if your TV is capable of switching the signal from the UK Pal-I to the Indian Pal-B. You can view the country broadcast standard type information HERE

Most television sets sold in the UK these days normally can be used on PAL B.

Regarding duty allowance, I am not sure of your status but Indians and Foreigners residing in India have a duty free allowance I believe of Rs25000. The duty if over this amount is approximately 36.5%

Importing Gold To India

Importing Gold To India

Q: I want to find out how much gold(gold bars) can we carry to India without having to pay anything at the customs?

A: I believe up to 10 Kilograms of gold per passenger can be imported to India provided the period of stay abroad has been at least six months.

There are also provisions where passengers can pay for the gold abroad and collect the gold from bonded warehouses of the State Bank of India. This eliminates the need to personally carry gold while travelling. State Bank of India has branches in many cities overseas.

I doubt if duty free import of gold is allowed to India, The customs duty on gold imported to India is now quite reasonable. The rate of duty when I last checked was Rupees 250 per 10 grams of gold. (Previously I think duty was Rupees 400 for 10 grams and was reduced to Rupees 250 in the year 2001)

I am sure the nearest Indian consulate will be able to give you the most current rules regarding import of gold to India.

The price of gold in India is competitive to world gold prices so do your homework before deciding to import gold to India.

On April 20, 2007 I purchased some jewelry items in New Delhi from a store in Cannaught Place. The rate they charged me for gold was calculated at Rupees 8700 for 10 grams of 22 carat gold.

Those wishing to apply for this type of special visa also have to meet some other conditions such as having no dependant children, being between the age of 18 and 30 and also meeting initial financial requirements to maintain themselves while in Australia. Top of Page

Rules and regulations for visa requirements change quite frequently and it is best to check directly with the concerned consulate or get advice from a reputable immigration consultant before spending money. Most foreign government consulates provide information free.

Travel on Indian passport after UK Citizenship approval

Travel on Indian passport after UK Citizenship approval

Q.1. I am planning to apply for British Citizenship in next month and need to know that once I apply for British Citizenship and it is approved. I will get the letter with confirmation and need to attend Citizenship Ceremony/Oath. As per the information on UKBA site, I can attend within 90 days. During this time I will have the Indian passport so Can I travel to India before taking the Oath and then after coming back will attend the Citizenship ceremony. I know once citizen is taken can't go on Indian passport but before Oath Can I go as I will still be on Indian
Citizenship.

Q.2 If I go for British passport and then get the visa stamp for India. Can I apply for OCI when go to India on Indian Visa with British Passport OR can I apply for OCI from India. Is there any time period that I can't go to India after Citizenship for
some period OR can I go once OCI is done as my plan to go back to India for Good.

Regards

A:  Once you are approved for UK citizenship you cannot travel on your Indian passport. As soon as your British citizen is approved, whether you get a British passport or not, you cannot travel on your Indian passport.
If you travel to India with your British passport, you may be able to apply for OCI in India. There is no restriction once you get your OCI to travel to India. Your OCI visa should be valid from the day it is stamped on your British passport.

Apply for OCI/PIO for child born in India to British Citizens

Apply for OCI/PIO for child born in India to British Citizens

Q: I am a British citizen living in India with a PIO card, i have had a son in India now 8 months old, he has not applied for any passport yet, but i will be applying for a British passport in the next week. i would like to know once he gets his British passport, how soon does he have to apply for a PIO/OCI card? there may be a gap of about 2 weeks from the time he gets his British passport till I apply for his PIO/OCI?

your help in this matter will be very much appreciated.
Rakesh Nath

A: You cannot apply for OCI/PIO card before getting an entry visa first for your son.

You need to contact the Ministry of Home Affairs, Foreigners Division, Jaisalmer House, 26 Man Singh Road New Delhi as they are the ones who have the authority to issue the first visa from within India. You will need to show them the proper documentation such as birth certificate of your son and other pertinent documents.

They will issue the authority letter (normally a sealed letter to the FRRO)and then the FRRO office in the area you reside will do the visa endorsement. Once you get visa for your son, you should be able to apply for OCI/PIO.

Customs Duty on cars taken to India

Customs Duty on cars taken to India

Q: I am planning to take my two year old Toyota to India on a transfer of residency. What is the rate of customs duty charged in India on cars.

A: The rate of duty charged in India presently works out to about 181% Customs duty is charged on the basis of list price prevailing.

Trade discount and in the case of used second hand cars the depreciation on the value of the car, depending on the age of the vehicle are deducted from the price list.

Freight charges, insurance and landing charges are added to arrive at the final assessable value of the car, on which duty must be paid from your earnings abroad. I would contact a clearance broker in Mumbai to help with documentation and advice if you are seriously contemplating taking your car to India.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan delivers a baby girl

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan [ Images ] have become proud parents of a baby girl. The actress gave birth to a girl this morning at the Seven Hills hospital in Andheri, a western Mumbai [ Images ] suburb.

The 38-year-old actress developed labour pains around 4 am and was rushed to the labour room where the delivery took place after nearly six hours.

Hospital sources said the delivery was normal and that mother and daughter were both doing fine.

An ecstatic Amitabh Bachchan [ Images ] tweeted, "I AM DADA to the cutest baby girl !!"  While first-time dad Abhishek tweeted, "IT'S A GIRL!!!!!! :)))))"

Ash was accompanied to the hospital by her parents Vrinda and Krishnaraj Rai, brother Aditya, husband Abhishek and in-laws Amitabh, Jaya and Shweta Nanda.

Close friends Sonali Bendre [ Images ] and husband Goldie Behl were among the first to visit Ash, and congratulate the family. Behl is a childhood friend of Abhishek, and also directed him in Drona [ Images ].

Amar Singh [ Images ] also paid a visit to the Bachchans.

The news of Ash's pregnancy was broken by Amitabh Bachchan through Twitter in June this year. As Bollywood's first family  and their well-wishers celebrated the Big B [ Images ] received over 2,000 congratulatory tweets the same day and people thronged the Bachchan residence in Juhu [ Images ] to celebrate.

The Bachchans chose a suburban hospital for the delivery, presumably to avoid media glare. While TV news channels, on their part, had agreed to stay away from the developments, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry had ordered television media not to park their vans outside the hospital.

Bachchan was questioned about having asked the I&B ministry to intervene in the matter. To which, he replied: 'HaHa ! Print MidDay asking if I have told I&B Ministry to block media news of Aish delivery ! Absolute rubbish ! Good try MDay ! &B and media matter ! Firstly I have no such intention ever, secondly do you really think I&B would listen to me !?? No way baby !'

Ash and Abhishek got together during the filming of Guru and got married in a glitzy ceremony in 2007 in the presence of the family's closest friends and associates.

Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan are also grandparents to daughter Shweta Nanda's two kids -- daughter Navya Naveli and son Agastya.

Here's wishing the proud parents a happy life ahead with their bundle of joy!
